Pre-Move

Do I need full service moving services?

The first step in your moving process is determining what your moving needs are. Start by researching local, national, and long-distance or international moving companies, and ask friends or family for any recommendations they might have. Investigate the companies you research or hear about with the Better Business Bureau and check their online reviews.

How do I choose a moving company?

Choosing the right moving company comes down to service, price, and efficiency. You want a moving company who offers a variety of packages that you can have tailored to you and your move’s needs, and at the right price. Make sure you go with a company that emphasizes safety and efficiency, and that is open and communicative with you and attentive to your needs.

When should I start contacting moving companies for a free moving estimate?

If not dealing with a last-minute move, try providing moving companies with as much notice as possible, especially during peak moving season (May-September). Six weeks is usually a good amount of time. This allows you and your company to coordinate your in-person estimate, and gives you enough time to make an informed and well-thought out decision. Try to have your decision made at least four weeks before your moving date.

What should I expect when my moving specialist comes to give me a free, in-person quote?

Your moving specialist will arrive at your home to visually survey all of your items – and may look in cabinet, drawers, or under beds to accurate calculate the number and weight of items. If you are getting rid of anything (especially bulky items) prior to a move, make sure to make note of that. If you don’t plan to move it – get rid of it! Make sure your house is organized and that everything is clear enough for your specialist to accurate estimate the cost of your move.

After the visual survey is complete, your moving specialist will calculate the weight, packing costs (if going with a full-service company), and any other charge related to your move.

During a Move

How do I prepare for moving day?

Make sure your home has already been cleared out of anything you don’t intend to take with you. If using packing services, make sure your things are clean, organized, and easily accessible to make things go as swiftly and efficiently as possible. If you’ve packed yourself, have everything ready to go and in an easily accessible place. Make sure all children and pets are kept calm and in a safe area to make sure they don’t get out or disrupt the movers as they work.

What is an Inventory?

On moving day, your driver will inventory your shipment as it is loaded. An inventory is a detailed listing of your household items, including the condition of the items at the time of the move. Make sure to double check everything to make sure it’s correct and nothing is missing, and make sure to note the condition listing of each item. Certain items that are boxed up, like pots and pans or glasses, cannot be seen by the driver and might be marked as such (especially if you packed items yourself).

The inventory should be cross-checked upon delivery by your driver and yourself as well. Make sure to note any discrepancies in condition and point out damage to your driver.

At Moving Services Inc., we work with only the most dependable and experienced drivers, so the inventory is mostly used as a safeguard against fraudulent claims. It is also a tool for our customers to use to make sure your items are all packed and are protected.

Packing

How do I pack or prepare my appliances for moving?

If you’re bringing large appliances like washers, dryers, or refrigerators, make sure they are disconnected and that washers have stabilizers installed. Your estimator can also help you to understand how these items will be serviced and moved safely. Most moving companies have servicers who will ensure that your appliances are stabilized and packed safely.

How do I pack my jewelry or valuables?

If you are packing items of extraordinary value, like jewelry, money, or valuable collections, make sure your moving specialist is aware of this in advance. It is recommended that you keep any irreplaceable or especially expensive items in your possession on moving day to ease stress and ensure their safety.

Every mover has a different procedure to follow in relation to high-value items. Talk to your moving specialist for a complete explanation of their company’s process.
